RESEARCH CONSULTANT: CONDUCTING A MULTI-COUNTRY MENA REGION RESEARCH ON ACCELERATED EDUCATION

This consultancy aimed to analyze the current situation of Accelerated Education (AE) for primary and lower secondary schools in 5 selected countries (Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Turkey) and to explore alternative programs targeting out-of-school children (OOSC) adolescents and youth.

The purpose of this assignment was three fold:

  • Conducting a comprehensive analysis of the current conditions and potential areas for implementing Accelerated Education Programs (AEP) in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Turkey. The aim was to facilitate better alignment and appropriate funding for out-of-school children (OOSC), adolescents, and youth programs.
  • Crafting actionable recommendations and strategic parameters in support of AEP for Syrian refugee children and youth.
  • Extending existing Accelerated Education research findings to encompass an exploration of the context of Syrian AE response.

Text BoxThe field mission associated with this consultancy included Egypt and various regions of Jordan (Za’tari Camp, Mafreq and other cities where MAKANI has been implemented). Field mission to Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey we’re not possible due to logistical and security constrains. The collected data focused on the operational context with regards to the realities of refugees in urban, peri-urban, rural, informal settlements and camp settings. The research used the 5A’s approach to analyze the availability, accessibility acceptability, affordability and appropriateness of the AEP within counties hosting Syrian refugees. The final report mapped the existing programs against the 10 principles of effective Accelerated Education Implementation outlined by the AEW. Additionally, it highlighted key issues related to AE, including policy considerations, program quality, target audiences, and systemic capacities. The report documented successful and efficient models, while also spotlighting lessons learned and noteworthy practices.
